How long does this text take to read?

That "5 min read" at the top of articles isn't a guess. It comes from a calculation built on the average reading speed. This tool estimates how long a text takes to read, working from the word count and a pace in words per minute.

Alongside reading time you get the word and character count, plus an estimate of speaking time. That last one helps a lot when you're prepping a video script, a talk or a podcast and everything has to fit a slot. It's the reference bloggers, copywriters and content creators tend to keep close.

Frequently asked questions

Does the character count include spaces?

It does, and line breaks along with them. The figure is the raw length of whatever sits in the box, with nothing subtracted, so there is no characters-without-spaces variant here. Words follow the simple rule of blocks separated by whitespace: e-mail counts as one, R$ 50 counts as two, and text pasted with HTML formatting counts every tag as a word. Paste clean text if you want an honest number.

My article reads 4min 12s, but I wanted the rounded 5 min read.

The tool shows the exact value and never rounds up. Under a minute it prints seconds, between a minute and an hour it uses the 4min 12s format, and past that it switches to hours and minutes. The badge blogs publish usually rounds to the next whole minute, which turns 4min 12s into 5 min. To match a specific platform, change the speed instead: Medium works at 265 words per minute, not the 200 filled in here.

Why is speaking time so much longer than reading time?

Because the two fields start from different paces: 200 words per minute for silent reading and 130 for speech, which is roughly podcast narration. The same word count is divided by each one. For a talk or a presentation, something between 150 and 160 tends to be closer to reality, and reading technical material aloud runs slower still. Clearing one of the speed fields falls back to the default rather than zeroing the result.
