How many minutes this text takes

You finished the post and need to know whether it fits the five-minute read the client asked for, or you have a script in hand and want to check the video will not run long. Paste the text into the box and the answer shows up instantly, with no button to press: how many words there are and the estimated reading time, recalculated on every keystroke.

The output is a single sentence, words and minutes. Character and paragraph counts do not appear in the result, even though the page description mentions all three. Words are counted as blocks separated by whitespace, so R$ 1.500,00 counts as two and guarda-chuva counts as one. The speed is fixed at 200 words per minute and the time always rounds up: 200 words give 1 minute, 201 already give 2.

Treat 200 per minute as a silent, on-screen reading pace. For narration read aloud, a comfortable rhythm usually sits closer to 150 words per minute, so a 600-word script shown here as 3 minutes tends to run 4 in the recording. You cannot change the speed on the page; if you work with a different pace, divide the word count by it yourself. The counting happens entirely in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

Does it count characters and paragraphs too?
No. The result shows only the word count and the estimated time, even though the page description mentions other counts. Use a dedicated character counter for that.
What reading speed does it assume?
200 words per minute, with the time always rounded up. That is why any short text shows as 1 minute.
How does it count currency values and hyphenated words?
By whitespace. R$ 1.500,00 counts as two words and guarda-chuva counts as one.
