What is WPM?

WPM (Words Per Minute) is the standard way to measure typing speed, where each "word" stands for 5 characters. A typical adult lands around 40 WPM. Professional typists hit anywhere from 80 to 100 WPM.

Accuracy tells you what percentage of the characters you got right. Mistakes show up highlighted in red and need fixing before you move on.

How fast do you type?

Typing fast without errors weighs a lot in study and at work, and the only way to get better at it is by measuring. The test times your typing and returns your speed in words per minute (WPM) and characters per minute (CPM).

But speed isn't everything, so it also looks at accuracy and shows how many errors you made along the way, because racing and slipping up gets you nowhere. It's a solid gauge of your current pace, and repeating the test now and then turns into a fun way to track your progress.

Frequently asked questions

I typed the whole passage and no result appeared. What did I miss?

The run ends only when what you typed matches the passage character for character, accents, punctuation and capitals included. Any letter still highlighted in red holds the finish back. Backspace and fix it: errors get recounted on every keystroke by comparing your line against the original, so accuracy climbs again the moment a wrong character gives way to the right one.

Why does WPM start absurdly high in the first seconds?

Because elapsed time has a floor of one second. Below that the division falls back on this minimum, and two or three characters typed straight away turn into an inflated speed that drops and settles after a few seconds of text. Worth keeping in mind too: CPM counts every character typed, mistakes included, and the accuracy percentage beside it is what tracks correctness. WPM is simply CPM divided by five.

Can I practise with my own text?

No. Pressing Start pulls one of four fixed passages at random, with no field for pasting anything else, and those four passages are written in Portuguese, so an English speaker ends up typing accented words letter by letter. The Enter key stays blocked during the run so a line break cannot upset the comparison. Nothing is stored: reloading or hitting Reset clears the score, and there is no history or leaderboard.
