US letter grades and GPA: scale and example
On the standard US scale, a percentage score (0β100) lands in a letter grade: A 93β100, A- 90β92, B+ 87β89, B 83β86, B- 80β82, C+ 77β79, C 73β76, C- 70β72, D 60β69, F below 60. Each letter then carries a grade point on the 4.0 GPA: A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0.0. A plus or minus shifts the value by 0.3, though A+ is usually held at 4.0. Example: a Brazilian student sitting at 8.5 (out of 10) scales to 85%, which is letter B, so GPA 3.0.
Applications
US university admissions: undergraduate and graduate programs report GPA on a 4.0 scale, so a foreign applicant has to convert the transcript first. BR-to-US conversion: the usual move is to multiply the Brazilian CR (0β10) by 10 to get a percentage, then read off the letter. Exchange programs: ISEP, Fulbright, CAPES-PrInt and the like ask for a GPA equivalence when they screen candidates. Internal use: a handful of Brazilian schools and bilingual institutions just run the US scale directly.
FAQ
Is there a single official conversion? No. WES (World Education Services) has its own table, and so does each university. The scale shown here is just the most widely accepted reference.
What about weighted GPA? US high schools tend to bump up the GPA for AP/honors classes (A in AP = 5.0). At college level it is usually unweighted.
Is D a passing grade? At many institutions, technically yes. But most graduate programs want a C or higher in the courses that matter for your major.
