Beaufort Wind Scale Converter

Convert wind speed in km/h to the Beaufort scale, from 0 (calm) to 12 (hurricane), with a description of each level. Useful for sailing, fishing and weather.

Beaufort + descrição

From forecast km/h to a wind force number

The forecast says 45 km/h and the crew at the club says force 6. Same wind, two languages: the km/h figure is a measurement, while the Beaufort scale describes what that wind does to the sea, the trees and your boat. Sailors, anglers, paraglider pilots and anyone rigging outdoors think in force numbers, not raw speed. Type a speed here and you get the matching force with its label.

Under the hood it is a band table: 1, 5, 11, 19, 28, 38, 49, 61, 74, 88, 102 and 117 km/h mark the transitions, and anything above the last value is force 12. Two honest notes. The comparison is strictly less than, so a value sitting exactly on a boundary lands in the next force: enter 28 and you get force 5, even though the classic table assigns 20 to 28 km/h to force 4. Watch those exact edges. Also, the input accepts km/h only.

Remember what Beaufort measures: sustained wind at ten metres above open ground, not gusts. A gust typically arrives one or two forces above the average, and it is the gust that tears the sail or the awning. If your source uses knots or miles per hour, convert first: one knot is 1.852 km/h and one mph is 1.609 km/h. The page shows one force at a time, the one matching your input, and everything is computed in the browser.

Frequently asked questions

How many km/h is force 6?
The classic force 6 band, known as a strong breeze, runs from 39 to 49 km/h. At sea you see large waves forming with plainly visible foam crests.
Does the scale account for gusts?
No. Beaufort describes sustained mean wind, and gusts usually exceed it by one or two forces. For rigging, sailing or free flight safety, always plan around the forecast gust.
How do I convert knots to km/h?
Multiply by 1.852. Twenty knots, for instance, is about 37 km/h, which sits at the top of force 5.
