Vitiligo Repigmentation Duration
Vitiligo is an autoimmune skin condition that affects about 1% of the Brazilian population. Melanocytes are destroyed, which leaves the depigmented patches you see. Bringing the color back is a slow process. As a rough planning estimate, months ≈ 6 + bodyAreas × 6, which usually lands somewhere in the 6–24 months range of active treatment. The face and neck tend to come back sooner than the hands and feet.
Treatment usually leans on a few options. Narrowband UVB phototherapy (NB-UVB) at 311 nm runs 2–3 sessions a week. There are also topical corticosteroids, tacrolimus 0.1% ointment for the face and folds, and the newer ruxolitinib cream (Opzelura), the first JAK inhibitor the FDA approved in 2022 specifically for nonsegmental vitiligo. The SBD (Sociedade Brasileira de Dermatologia) consensus pushes for early treatment, photoprotection of skin that isn't affected, and psychological support, because vitiligo weighs heavily on quality of life.
Applications
Use it to keep expectations grounded, work out how often you'll attend phototherapy, ballpark the cost, and line things up with your dermatologist's follow-ups. It's an educational tool only. Real vitiligo protocols are tailored to each person.
FAQ
Does vitiligo have a cure? There's no definitive cure, but modern protocols (NB-UVB + ruxolitinib) can bring back a good amount of color, especially on the face.
Which body areas respond best? The face and neck respond fastest. Hands, feet and bony prominences are the stubborn ones, and they may never fully repigment.
Is this a substitute for medical advice? No. Always see a dermatologist registered with SBD/CRM, since ruxolitinib and phototherapy both need a prescription and ongoing monitoring.
