Calculating wallpaper rolls
A standard European roll measures 10 m × 0.53 m = 5.3 m². To find how many you need, divide the wall area by the usable roll area and round up: rolls = wall_area / (roll_area · pattern_efficiency). The pattern type matters here. Drop-match patterns, where the motif steps diagonally from strip to strip, throw away 15–20% of each roll on alignment cuts. Plain or random-match prints lose closer to 5%. So one accent wall of about 10 m² runs through 2 rolls, while papering a whole average room (roughly 40 m² of wall) takes around 8. One thing people forget: buy everything from the same batch number stamped on the roll, or you may end up with subtle color differences between strips.
Applications
This is mostly a job for interior decoration: living rooms, bedrooms, kids' rooms, hostess walls, home offices. Peel & stick wallpapers such as Tempaper or Chasing Paper skip the paste entirely and peel off without damage, which makes them a good fit for rented apartments. Traditional non-woven paper works differently; the pre-mixed adhesive goes on the wall rather than the paper. Whichever you use, decide where the seams will fall before you cut, and start the first strip in a corner that sits outside the main sight lines.
FAQ
Why does drop-match waste more? Every strip has to be cut so its pattern lines up with the one beside it, which sacrifices roughly half the repeat height between strips. A pattern with a 64 cm repeat loses about 32 cm on each strip.
Standard roll vs American roll? The European and Brazilian roll runs 10 m × 0.53 m. The American format, which you see less often, is 8.2 m × 0.68 m. Read the spec on the roll instead of assuming one or the other.
Can I wallpaper a bathroom? Yes, but keep it outside the shower box and use vinyl or PVC-coated paper. Plain cellulose paper gives out quickly once humidity gets to it. In a kitchen it holds up as long as you stay away from the splash zone.
