How to estimate wallpaper rolls

The formula is rolls = (perimeter × height) / coverage_per_roll. A standard European roll is 10 m × 0.53 m = 5.3 m². Tack on 15–20% for losses, since cuts, end strips and the pattern repeat (drop) all eat into your material; patterned papers with a vertical repeat over 30 cm waste even more. An average 3 × 2.5 m bedroom (perimeter 12 m × height 2.6 m = 31 m²) lands around 8 rolls once you've got margin. Run the numbers on a 15 m² wall: 15 / 5.3 = 2.83, plus 20% gets you 4 rolls, and you always round up. As for roll types, you'll find traditional vinyl (water-based glue), non-woven (TNT, paste-the-wall, which goes up more easily), and peel & stick / removable papers (Tempaper) that work nicely for renters or an accent wall when you don't want to commit.

FAQ

Should I discount doors and windows? In small rooms, usually not. The extra material covers the cutting losses you get around openings anyway. Only bother discounting in large rooms with lots of openings.

What is pattern repeat (drop)? It's the vertical distance after which the print starts over. A bigger drop means more waste, so add 25–30% once the repeat goes above 50 cm.

Removable or traditional? Removable peel & stick suits renters and quick changes, though you pay more per m². Traditional vinyl with glue lasts 10+ years and comes out cheaper when the install is meant to stay.

Kraft Cooking H-Factor

Computes the H-factor of a kraft cook, the index that combines time and temperature into a single number to control the digester. The H-factor is the integral of the relative delignification rate over the cook, and in the isothermal form used on the shop floor it equals H = time × exp(43.20 − 16113 ÷ absolute temperature), with time in hours and temperature in kelvin; the two constants come from Vroom's (1957) fit and were chosen so that the relative rate equals 1 at 100 °C. The number lets you trade time for temperature without changing the outcome: two cooks with the same H-factor and the same alkali charge reach the same kappa number, so raising the temperature allows shortening the plateau, and this is how production is recovered from a late digester. The isothermal form was adopted, considering only the time at the temperature plateau; the full H-factor also integrates the heating ramp and comes out 10 to 20% larger, depending on the ramp rate. Enter the time at the plateau and the cooking temperature.

Ash Content (Mineral Filler)

Compute the ash content of a paper, ash = (ash mass after ignition / paper mass)·100%, corresponding to the mineral filler (fillers and mineral pigments such as calcium carbonate, kaolin and titanium dioxide) added to the sheet. Fillers improve opacity, brightness, smoothness and cost (replacing expensive fiber), but in excess reduce strength. Printing papers have 10–25% ash. Enter the ash mass and the paper mass.
