Sea state and rip currents on Bahia's coast
Along the Bahia coastline the sea state is usually read off the significant wave height (Hs). You get marola, or calm sea, when Hs < 1 m; moderate conditions sit between 1 m ≤ Hs ≤ 2 m; and it turns dangerous once Hs > 2 m. The SE swell tends to pick up from May to September. Between December and March the water is usually calmer at beaches such as Porto da Barra, Itapuã and Praia do Forte.
A rip current (corrente de retorno) is a narrow channel of water that runs out to sea through the breaker zone, and it’s what drowns most people on Brazilian beaches. Watch for a darker strip of water, a stretch where fewer waves are breaking, and foam or sediment being pulled offshore. If it catches you, don’t swim against the current. Swim parallel to the shore for 30-50 m until you’re out of the channel, then head back in diagonally, riding the waves. The Salvamar Bahia lifeguards (CBMBA — Corpo de Bombeiros) work Salvador’s main beaches; a red flag means swimming is off-limits.
Applications
Beach safety briefings, planning a surf or stand-up paddle session, tourism in Salvador, Morro de São Paulo and Costa do Sauípe, and adding context to forecasts from the Marinha do Brasil — DHN (Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation) and the CPTEC/INPE wave models.
FAQ
What is the difference between marola and ressaca? Marola means small, calm waves (< 1 m). Ressaca means swell > 2.5 m, which usually shows up with cold fronts and onshore winds.
How do I spot a rip current from the beach? Look for a deceptively calm gap between the breakers, water that looks darker than its surroundings, and floating debris drifting out to sea.
Where can I get an official forecast? The Marinha do Brasil DHN puts out daily marine bulletins at marinha.mil.br/chm, and CPTEC/INPE also issues regional wave forecasts.
