Banana Yield: Bunches per Hectare per Year
Three things decide how much banana a field produces: how densely it is planted, how many bunches each plant gives per cycle, and what a bunch weighs. The calculator runs bunches_per_year = area_ha × plants_per_ha × bunches_per_plant. To get total mass, multiply the bunch count by the average bunch weight, which for the commercial cultivars grown in Brazil sits around 12–25 kg.
A Brazilian commercial plantation usually carries 1,500–2,000 plants per hectare and brings in 25–45 tons per hectare per year. Most of that comes from the Cavendish group (Nanica, Nanicão, Grande Naine) and the Prata group (Prata-Anã, Maranhão). The biggest producing states are São Paulo, Bahia, Minas Gerais and Santa Catarina. Vale do Ribeira, straddling PR and SP, is the largest single Nanica-growing region in the country.
Applications
Growers, cooperatives like Cooperbanana, and packing houses lean on this projection when they schedule the weekly cut, book cold-chain space and ripening rooms, hire crews, and put a revenue number on paper. CONAB and EMBRAPA Mandioca e Fruticultura publish yield benchmarks you can use to sanity-check your figures for plants per hectare and bunch rate.
FAQ
How many bunches does each banana plant produce per year? One. A pseudostem makes a single bunch, then gets cut down, and the daughter sucker takes over the spot. So in a well-run plot you can count on roughly one bunch per planting site each year.
What is the difference between Nanica, Prata and Cavendish? Cavendish (Nanica, Nanicão) is what gets exported: thin peel, sweet pulp. Prata has a thicker peel and a firmer flavor, and it is the one the domestic market tends to ask for. They come from different subgroups of Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana.
What is the main disease in banana plantations? Black Sigatoka (Mycosphaerella fijiensis), often called the banana’s “lung disease.” It goes after the leaves and can halve your yield if you let it run unchecked. Keeping it down means resistant cultivars, leaf pruning, and rotating fungicides as part of an integrated program.
