Cotton Yield Calculator (arrobas per hectare)

In Brazil, cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) yield is reported in arrobas of lint per hectare, with 1 arroba (@) standing for 15 kg of lint. The base formula reads total_arrobas = area_ha × base_yield_at_per_ha × management_factor. That management factor, running from 0.7 to 1.2, captures how fertility, pest control and rainfall played out on a given field.

Modern fields in Bahia, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and Goiás usually come in at 220–280 @/ha, which puts Brazil among the most productive growers anywhere. In the Cerrado, the first crop goes in around December and January and gets harvested in July, while cotton grown as a second crop (safrinha) follows soybean. Bt transgenic cultivars now cover more than 80% of the planted area. Official figures come out each season from the growers' association ABRAPA and from CONAB.

Applications

The calculator helps you estimate lint output and size up ginning capacity. You can also run revenue scenarios off arroba quotes on B3, weigh Bt cultivars against conventional ones, and see how your yields stack up against ABRAPA's regional averages.

FAQ

How many kilograms is one arroba of cotton? One arroba (@) of cotton lint is 15 kg. The cattle arroba is also 15 kg, but of carcass, and here the unit refers to the lint fraction alone, not seed cotton.

What yield is considered good? The modern Brazilian benchmark sits at 220–280 @/ha, or 3,300–4,200 kg of lint per hectare. The best-run operations clear 320 @/ha.

Where is Brazilian cotton grown? Mostly in the Cerrado biome. Bahia and Mato Grosso together make up over 80% of national production, with Mato Grosso do Sul and Goiás behind them.
