Understanding the Brazilian Coastline

According to IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), Brazil’s mainland coastline measures 7,491 km in straight-line projection. Once you fold in coastal islands, bays, estuaries and all the indentations, the total climbs to ~9,198 km, which puts it among the longest contiguous coastlines on Earth.

The coast runs from Cabo Orange in Amapá, near the border with French Guiana, all the way down to Chuí in Rio Grande do Sul on the Uruguay border. Along the way it touches 17 coastal states and a wide mix of ecosystems, from mangroves and restingas to dunes, cliffs and Atlantic Forest fragments. To estimate a partial distance along this arc, the tool applies distance = fraction × 7,491.

Applications

It comes in handy for tourism planning, whether that's cruise legs or a coastal road trip along the BR-101. It also fits environmental studies (the Mata Atlântica corridor, the Reserva da Biosfera), maritime patrol logistics for the Brazilian Navy, and teaching material about the Blue Amazon: the 5.7 million km² Exclusive Economic Zone (ZEE) that reaches 200 nautical miles out from the coast.

FAQ

Why do different sources cite different lengths? Blame the coastline paradox: the finer your measurement scale, the longer the answer gets. IBGE’s 7,491 km comes from a generalized projection, and once you add the islands it rises to 9,198 km.

What is the Blue Amazon (Amazônia Azul)? It's Brazil’s sovereign maritime area, the ZEE plus the continental shelf, rich in oil (pre-sal), fisheries and biodiversity. In area it rivals the Amazon rainforest itself.

Which states border the Atlantic? From north to south: AP, PA, MA, PI, CE, RN, PB, PE, AL, SE, BA, ES, RJ, SP, PR, SC and RS.
