Bricks for Wall
Calculates how many bricks are needed to build a wall given dimensions.
—
Brick quantity per wall area
How many bricks fit in a square meter comes down to the unit's size and how it's laid. A 6-hole ceramic brick (9×14×19 cm) on its standard face works out to ~25 bricks/m². An 8-hole ceramic brick (19×19×29 cm) gives ~22 bricks/m², and a concrete block (14×19×39 cm) lands at ~12.5 blocks/m². Tack on 5-10% for waste and cutting, more if the wall has a lot of openings. Take a 5 m × 3 m wall = 15 m². With 6-hole brick that's 15 × 25 = 375 bricks, and 10% on top brings it to ~413 bricks. Mortar joints usually run 1-1.5 cm.
Applications and standards
This is what you reach for in masonry construction, DIY building, and when pulling a quote at retailers like Leroy Merlin and Cassol. On the standards side, NBR 15812 covers structural ceramic masonry, while NBR 15270 sets the dimensional and quality requirements for ceramic blocks and bricks. Bricklayers (pedreiros) lean on these same indices when they put together material lists and labor estimates.
FAQ
Why include 10% extra? You break units cutting them at corners, frames, and door or window openings. Skip the margin and you'll be making a second trip to the supplier.
Should I subtract openings? When a wall has large openings like windows and doors, take the opening's m² off the gross area first, then multiply.
What if the brick is laid on edge? The orientation changes how many fit per m². A 6-hole brick on edge comes to ~33/m², so you get a thinner wall but need more units.
Do I need to buy mortar too? You do. Figure about 0.025 m³ of laying mortar per m² of wall, though that shifts with the joint thickness.
