Parallax Distance Calculator
Computes parsec distance of an astronomical object from its parallax in arcseconds.

Parallax distance: d(pc) = 1 / p(arcsec)
Stellar parallax is the apparent shift of a nearby star against the distant background as Earth swings around the Sun. By definition, an object whose annual parallax angle p equals 1 arcsecond sits at 1 parsec (โ3.26 light-years). The formula d(pc) = 1 / p(arcsec) is rung zero of the cosmic distance ladder. Take Proxima Centauri: its p is about 0.77โณ, so d โ 1/0.77 โ 1.30 pc โ 4.24 light-years. Back in 1989โ1993 the Hipparcos mission pinned down ~118,000 stars to milli-arcsecond precision. ESA's Gaia DR3 (2022) went much further, releasing parallaxes for ~1.8 billion stars at micro-arcsecond accuracy.
Applications: cosmic distance ladder, Gaia, Galactic mapping
Parallax anchors the cosmic distance ladder, calibrating the Cepheids, RR Lyrae and Type Ia supernovae that astronomers lean on for intergalactic distances. ESA's Gaia mission is building the most detailed 3D map of the Milky Way we have, sharpening stellar luminosities, ages and the local Hubble constant along the way. It also lets you measure the masses of binary systems directly and stress-test models of how stars evolve.
FAQ
What is 1 parsec? The distance at which 1 AU subtends 1 arcsecond, which comes to about 3.0857ยท10ยนโถ m or 3.26 light-years.
Why arcseconds? Stellar parallaxes are tiny. Even the nearest star comes in below 1โณ. Working in arcseconds keeps the inverse relation d = 1/p clean and free of conversion factors when the answer is in parsecs.
What is Gaia's limit? For bright stars Gaia reaches about 10 ฮผas precision, which gives reliable parallaxes out to ~10 kpc, covering much of the Galactic disk.
Does it work for galaxies? No. Beyond a few kpc the parallaxes get too small to measure, so other rungs like Cepheids and supernovae take over for extragalactic distances.
