5-step funnel drop-off
A drop-off funnel tells you how many users you lose moving from one step to the next. For any given stage the drop-off rate is drop = (in − out) / in, and to get cumulative conversion you multiply the per-step conversion rates together. Take a typical 5-step e-commerce flow: visit → product page 30%, product → cart 10%, cart → checkout 70%, checkout → purchase 70%, which leaves you with an overall CR of roughly 1.5%. A mobile app version might look like install → onboarding → key action → D7 retention → paid. Dave McClure's AARRR Pirate Funnel (Acquisition, Activation, Retention, Referral, Revenue), which he coined back in 2007, is still the go-to 5-step model for SaaS and consumer apps.
Applications
This shows up in CRO (Conversion Rate Optimization) work, GA4 funnel exploration, Mixpanel and Amplitude reports, and most growth dashboards. The usual advice is to spot the step with the largest drop, treat it as the bottleneck, and run your first A/B test there. Fixing the weakest link tends to move total conversion far more than tinkering with the others.
FAQ
Drop-off rate or conversion rate, which one should I report? They say the same thing from opposite angles, since drop = 1 − CR. Drop-off puts the spotlight on what you're losing, while CR frames it as how efficient the step is.
What's a "normal" drop between cart and checkout? Cart abandonment usually lands somewhere around 60–80%, and the single biggest culprit is shoppers getting hit with an unexpected shipping cost.
Why fix the worst step first? It comes down to compounding. In a 5-step funnel, cutting the biggest drop in half will often double your end-to-end conversion.
