Planet rotation period: sidereal vs. solar day
A planet's rotation period is how long it takes to spin once on its axis. There are two definitions worth keeping straight. The sidereal day is one full rotation measured against the distant stars, while the solar day is the time for the Sun to come back to the same meridian. On Earth the sidereal day runs 23 h 56 min 4 s and the solar day is 24 h; those extra ~4 min are there because Earth has moved along its orbit in the meantime. Mercury spins once every 58.6 days, locked in a 3:2 spin-orbit resonance with the Sun. Venus turns retrograde over 243 days, which is actually slower than its own year. Mars comes in at 24 h 37 min, strikingly close to Earth. Jupiter is the fastest of the large planets at roughly 9.9 h, fast enough to flatten it noticeably at the poles. As an example, a satellite sitting at the Mars equator measures one sol as 24 h 39 min 35 s.
Applications
Interplanetary mission planning, where NASA's Mars Helicopter Ingenuity ran on a 24 h 37 min sol schedule. Exoplanet habitability studies. Geostationary orbit altitude calculations, planetary atmosphere modeling, and time-zone schemes for future Mars colonies. It also shows up in amateur astronomy when you track surface features, since Jupiter's Great Red Spot transits in about 9.9 h.
FAQ
Why is the sidereal day shorter than the solar day? Because the planet keeps moving along its orbit. Once it has finished one sidereal rotation, it still needs to turn a little further before the Sun lands back on the same meridian.
Why does Venus rotate backwards? No one is certain. The leading ideas are a giant impact early in the solar system that flipped its axis, or strong atmospheric tides that gradually reversed the spin across billions of years.
Does the rotation period change over time? Yes, though slowly. Earth's day grows by about 1.8 ms per century because of tidal braking from the Moon.
