SNCF's TGV (Train à Grande Vitesse) holds a cruise speed of 320 km/h once it reaches the dedicated high-speed tracks, the LGV (Ligne à Grande Vitesse). Each stop tacks on something like 4 to 6 minutes, since the train has to climb up to and then drop back down from station speed.

The world rail speed record sits at 574.8 km/h, set by a modified TGV V150 on 3 April 2007 between Prunay and Le Chemin. Day to day, though, the numbers are tamer. The famous Paris–Marseille run covers 776 km in roughly 3 hours, which works out to about 260 km/h once you count the stops. Why is the commercial speed lower than the record? The V150 was a one-off: reinforced traction, oversized wheels, and a catenary modified to 31 kV. Regular service runs at 25 kV and keeps a safety margin in hand.

What is the difference between TGV and Eurostar? Eurostar trainsets descend from the TGV, but they're adapted to the UK loading gauge and carry three voltage systems so they can work the cross-Channel route.
