The Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) is just your waist circumference divided by your height, both in the same unit: WHtR = waist / height. Three bands tell you where you stand: <0.5 healthy, 0.5–0.6 central obesity, and >0.6 high cardiovascular risk. There's an easy way to remember it. Keep your waist less than half your height. Take a 85 cm waist and 175 cm height: that comes out to 0.486, comfortably in the healthy range and just shy of the central-obesity line.
Clinical context
Meta-analyses (Ashwell 2012, The Lancet) found that WHtR predicts cardiovascular and metabolic risk better than BMI does. The reason is that it picks up abdominal fat, the metabolically active kind tied to diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidemia. One more thing makes it handy: the same 0.5 cutoff holds across ages and ethnicities, so it slots into pediatric screening, occupational health programs, school health checks and fast clinical triage, the situations where BMI tends to miss someone who is lean overall but carries weight at the waist.
FAQ
Is WHtR better than BMI? When the question is cardiovascular and metabolic risk, yes; several studies report a stronger correlation. BMI still earns its keep for general nutritional status and population epidemiology.
Where do I measure my waist? Halfway between your lowest rib and the top of your hip bone (the iliac crest). Breathe out normally, then read the tape, keeping it flexible and parallel to the floor.
Does WHtR apply to children? It does. The 0.5 cutoff holds from age 6 up, and that's a real advantage over BMI percentiles, which need separate charts for sex and age.
What if my WHtR is above 0.5? Don't read it in isolation. Look at it alongside your blood pressure, fasting glucose and lipid profile. The good news is that diet and physical activity tend to trim waist circumference faster than they shift total weight.
