Car rental: daily rate, mileage and add-ons

What you pay for a car rental adds up as total = (daily · days) + (extra_km · R$/km) + insurance + fees + fuel. Extra kilometres only hit the bill once your actual driving runs past the included mileage; some plans come with no cap, others hand you 200–400 km/day. The usual add-ons are CDW (Collision Damage Waiver, which cuts your liability for damage to the rental car), LDW/SLDW (Loss/Super Loss Damage Waiver, for third-party damage), PAI (Personal Accident Insurance), plus an additional driver and child seats. On fuel policies, you'll see "full-to-full" (return the tank full, which is the cheapest) or "convenience" (the company refuels and bills it with a markup). For a quick example: 5 days at R$ 120/day with 200 km/day included gives you 1,000 km. Planning 1,500 km leaves 500 extra km at R$ 0.50/km, so R$ 250 on top, plus R$ 50 in fixed fees. Total = 600 + 250 + 50 = R$ 900.

Applications in the Brazilian market

In Brazil the big three are Localiza, Movida and Unidas (now Localiza&Co.), while Foco, Yes Rent a Car and international names like Hertz, Avis and Budget fight for the rest. People rent for plenty of reasons: a leisure trip, a corporate fleet (Movida Empresas, Localiza Frotas), app drivers (Uber Aluguel, 99 Aluga) taking a car by the week or month, a replacement vehicle while their own is in the body shop, or the old "buy vs rent" question once you weigh the total cost of ownership. The subscription plans (Localiza Meoo, Movida On, Unidas Livre) run 12/24/36-month contracts at a fixed monthly fee that folds in insurance and maintenance. As of 2024, an entry-level car averaged R$ 150–200/day, or R$ 2,500–4,500/month on subscription.

FAQ

Is the daily rate the final price? No. On top of it come insurance and waivers, extra-mileage charges, fuel, additional-driver fees, off-hours pickup, airport surcharges and a security deposit (caução) held on the credit card.

Should I take the CDW? Turn it down and you're on the hook for the full participation value (usually R$ 4,000–8,000) if the car gets damaged. A few premium credit cards already bundle rental insurance, so check what yours covers before you decide.

Rent or subscribe? Under 30 days, just rent by the day. Once you're past 6 months, a monthly subscription or long-term lease costs less per day and throws in maintenance. Beyond 36 months, financing or a consortium can come out ahead of both.

Fuel: which policy is best? Go "full-to-full" every time. You top off cheaper at any gas station before handing the car back. The "convenience" option bills you for the whole tank plus a service fee upfront, no matter how little you actually burned.
