Estimating Electrical Tape per Splice
On low-voltage jobs you can estimate how much insulating tape you'll burn through with Ltape = nsplices × v × π × d. Here v is how many overlapping turns you wrap (3 to 5 is typical, half-lap, roof-tile style), d is the splice diameter in metres, and n counts the splices. A standard 19 mm × 20 m PVC roll usually covers somewhere between 25 and 40 medium splices.
The tape has to comply with IEC 60454 and the Brazilian standard ABNT NBR 7773. That means a thermal class of at least 80 °C for PVC (or 120 °C where the duty is harder) and dielectric strength no lower than 600 V. NBR 5410, which governs low-voltage installations, also calls for conductors to be identified by a colour code: black, brown or grey for the phases, blue for neutral, green/yellow for protective earth.
Applications
You'll reach for it to insulate cable splices in distribution boards, junction boxes, ceiling outlets and circuit extensions, to bundle cables together, to mark phases by colour, and to patch up outer sheathing on a provisional basis. From 1 kV upward, lay self-fusing rubber tape under the PVC layer first; the PVC on its own won't cut it.
FAQ
How many turns should I wrap around a splice? Go with at least 3 overlapping half-lapped turns (the roof-tile pattern), keeping the tape stretched around 25 % so it actually grips.
Can I reuse old tape? Don't. Once tape has been stretched or has aged, it loses both dielectric strength and adhesive, and that's how short circuits start.
What is the difference between cheap tape and 3M Scotch 33+? Branded tape holds its dielectric strength and adhesion when temperatures and humidity climb. Reach for it whenever the splice carries continuous current or lives in a damp spot.
