Fertile Window by Cycle Calculator

Estimates the approximate fertile window from average cycle and first day.

Understanding the Fertile Window

The fertile window is the stretch of days in a menstrual cycle when conception is most likely. It usually runs from the 5 days before ovulation through the day of ovulation and about 1 day after, which works out to roughly 6 fertile days. Why does it open before ovulation instead of after? Sperm can last up to 5 days inside the female reproductive tract, but the ovum stays viable for only about 24 hours.

One common way to estimate it is the Ogino–Knaus “rhythm” method. For a regular cycle of length C, you expect ovulation around day C − 14, counted from the first day of the last menstrual period. That puts the fertile window at [ovulation − 5, ovulation + 1]. Keep in mind that the classical rhythm method fails near 15% of the time in typical use, so don't treat it as your only form of contraception.

Applications

Couples trying to conceive use the fertile window to time intercourse. Those trying to avoid pregnancy often pair cycle tracking with barrier methods instead. Digital trackers like Flo, Clue or Natural Cycles sharpen the estimate by logging a few signals: basal body temperature, which rises 0.3–0.5°C after ovulation, shifts in cervical mucus, and LH surges picked up by ovulation predictor kits.

FAQ

Is this calculator a contraceptive method? No. Treat it as an educational estimate and talk to a gynecologist for contraception advice tailored to you.

What if my cycle is irregular? The Ogino–Knaus formula is built around regular cycles. When yours varies a lot, the estimate gets much shakier, and basal temperature or LH tests will serve you better.

Can I get pregnant outside the fertile window? Yes, though the odds are low. Both sperm longevity and the exact timing of ovulation can shift from cycle to cycle.
