Sizing a Garden Hose by Route Length
Start from the tap and walk the actual path to the farthest spot you need to water, going around walls, beds and whatever else is in the way. Measure that, then leave yourself some slack. The shorthand most people use is Ltotal = Lroute × 1.20. That extra 20 % accounts for mounting the reel, the up-and-down of changing heights, and the radius the hose needs to bend at each corner. Skip the margin and you end up with a hose that pulls tight at the connection, kinks, and chokes the flow.
For homes you'll find three common diameters: 1/2″ (12.7 mm), 3/4″ (19 mm) and 1″ (25.4 mm). A wider hose carries more water at the same pressure, the trade-off being weight and cost. Domestic supply usually sits around 4–6 bar, so read the rating printed on the hose to make sure it won't burst at the nozzle.
Applications
Think watering the lawn and flower beds, washing the car or the yard, topping up a pool or tank, getting water to a tap that sits far from the house. A reel or enroller keeps the rubber out of the sun and away from mechanical wear, and a nozzle with a few jet settings stretches your water further when you irrigate. Brands like Tramontina and Tigre stock hoses at 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 m, which covers most layouts.
FAQ
Why add 20 % slack instead of the exact length? The real path bends around obstacles, runs up walls, and has to reach back to the reel. Buy the straight-line measurement and the hose almost always ends up stretched tight.
Which diameter should I pick? Up to 25 m, 1/2″ is fine. Between 25 and 50 m, or when you want more flow, step up to 3/4″. For an irrigation system or a really long run, 1″ is worth it.
Can I join two hoses? You can, though every coupling costs you a bit of pressure. Stick to one piece up to 30 m if you can; past that, reach for threaded connectors rather than barbed clamps.
