Mango Tree Fruiting Time (Mangifera indica)
How soon a mango tree gives you its first fruit depends mostly on how it was propagated. Grafted seedlings (muda enxertada) start fruiting in 2–4 years. Trees grown from seed (pé-franco, sown from a pit) usually need 6–10 years before they bear commercial fruit. Climate, soil, irrigation and pruning all push the timeline around too.
The big commercial cultivars in Brazil are Tommy Atkins (the most planted one worldwide), Palmer (low-fiber and oblong), Haden (large, with a blush of red), Espada (the traditional fibrous one that handles drought) and Rosa. Plant in October–November in the Southeast and September–November in the Northeast, so the juvenile growth lines up with the rainy season. A full-grown tree in production yields 100–300 kg/year. Most of the Brazilian crop comes from Bahia (São Francisco Valley), Pernambuco (Petrolina–Juazeiro) and São Paulo.
Applications
Smallholders use it to size a backyard orchard. Agronomy students reach for it to estimate the return on a planting. And commercial growers lean on it when they plan cash flow, roll out irrigation and schedule harvests for export to the EU and US markets.
FAQ
Can I speed up fruiting? You can. Start with grafted seedlings rather than seed, give the tree full sun (6+ hours), keep the soil from getting waterlogged, and on mature trees use paclobutrazol or selective pruning to coax flowering.
Why didn't my seed-grown mango fruit after 8 years? Seedlings vary genetically, and some simply never fruit commercially. The usual fix is to graft a known cultivar onto the trunk you already have.
How long does a mango tree live? In a commercial orchard it stays productive for 30–40 years. Left alone, it can live for centuries; some heritage trees in India are said to be 300+ years old.
