Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception

The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary always falls on the same day, December 8. That puts it exactly nine months before the Nativity of Mary on September 8, and it marks the Catholic doctrine that Mary was conceived free from original sin. Pope Pius IX defined the Marian dogma formally in the bull Ineffabilis Deus on December 8, 1854.

From colonial times until 1930, Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception was Brazil's official patroness. That year Pope Pius XI named Our Lady of Aparecida principal patroness of the country instead. The Immaculate Conception stayed on as co-patroness, and she carries the Iberian Marian tradition the Portuguese colonizers brought over. December 8 is not a federal holiday in Brazil, though it does count as a state holiday (in Bahia, for one) and a municipal holiday in dozens of cities, among them Salvador, Recife, João Pessoa, and Maceió.

Applications

Use this date to schedule local liturgies, novenas (Nov 29 – Dec 7), Marian processions, and to verify business hours in municipalities where December 8 is officially observed. The date is also relevant for academic and religious institutions named after the Immaculate Conception.

FAQ

Is December 8 a national holiday in Brazil? No. It is not on the federal list of Law 662/1949. However, several states and many municipalities — especially in the Northeast — observe it as an official holiday by state or municipal law.

What does the Immaculate Conception dogma mean? It teaches that Mary was preserved from original sin from the first moment of her conception in the womb of her mother Saint Anne — not to be confused with the virginal conception of Jesus, which is a separate doctrine.

Why isn’t she the main patroness anymore? Pope Pius XI elevated Our Lady of Aparecida to principal patroness of Brazil on July 16, 1930, recognizing the popular devotion to the dark-skinned image found by fishermen in the Paraíba do Sul River in 1717. The Immaculate Conception remains co-patroness and the universal patroness of Portugal.
