Corpus Christi in Brazil
Corpus Christi (Latin for “Body of Christ”) is a Catholic solemnity that honors the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. It always lands on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday, which works out to exactly Easter + 60 days. Since Easter is itself a movable feast tied to the lunar calendar, Corpus Christi can land anywhere from late May to late June.
Pope Urban IV established the feast in 1264 through the bull Transiturus de hoc mundo, prompted by the eucharistic visions of Saint Juliana of Liège and the Miracle of Bolsena. In Brazil it does not appear on the federal holiday list of Law 662/1949, yet most cities recognize it as a municipal or state holiday, especially where the population is largely Catholic, and the public sector usually treats it as a day off.
Applications
Use the date to map out the long weekend (Thursday, with Friday often taken as a “ponte”), to organize the traditional Eucharistic procession over colored carpets of sand, salt, sawdust, coffee grounds and flower petals, to set up liturgical events, and to line up retail and payroll calendars in the municipalities where the day is officially observed.
FAQ
Is Corpus Christi a national holiday in Brazil? No. Many localities recognize it as a state or municipal holiday, but it does not appear on the federal list of Law 662/1949. Banks usually close anyway, since Febraban observes the day.
How is the date calculated? Find Easter Sunday with the Gauss/Meeus algorithm and add 60 days. The result is always a Thursday, the 11th day after Pentecost.
What are the “tapetes” of Corpus Christi? They are decorative carpets laid out on the streets along the procession route. People shape religious images from dyed sawdust, salt, sand and other natural materials, a tradition that runs especially deep in Minas Gerais, São Paulo and the Northeast.
