Peregrine Falcon Speed (Falco peregrinus)
The peregrine falcon is the fastest animal on Earth, reaching speeds of up to 389 km/h (242 mph) during a hunting stoop (folded-wing dive). The official record belongs to Frightful, a falcon trained by Ken Franklin, measured in 2005 after a 5 km vertical dive. In cruise flight it averages 90–100 km/h. The dive speed approximates v ≈ √(2gh), where g = 9.81 m/s² and h is the altitude lost, with drag reduced by the streamlined body and the aerodynamic teardrop posture.
It is one of the most widely distributed birds in the world, found on every continent except Antarctica.
