Photoshop Layer Count for Typical Digital Art

There's no exact formula for how many layers an Adobe Photoshop document should have. What you get instead are rough ranges that depend on what you're making. A typical digital painting lands somewhere around 20-100 layers. A polished illustration tends to sit at 100-500. And a motion-graphics composition can blow past 1000+ layers once every frame, mask and adjustment gets split into its own layer.

Photoshop 2023 allows up to 8000 layers per document, though in practice things slow down well before you reach that number. Group folders, smart objects, adjustment layers and layer styles exist to keep the stack readable as a file gets busier. In Brazil, the Adobe Creative Cloud Photography plan runs about R$ 130/month and includes both Photoshop and Lightroom.

Applications

Handy when you're planning studio production, guessing how heavy a PSD will be before delivery, or working out how much RAM and VRAM a job needs. It also helps when training junior artists in non-destructive habits, or when checking whether a freelance illustration was actually built to the quality the client asked for.

FAQ

How many layers can Photoshop handle? The hard cap in Photoshop 2023 is 8000 layers per file. Realistically, though, most machines start dragging somewhere past 500-1000 layers, and how soon depends on your canvas size and how much RAM you have.

Should I flatten layers to save space? Save that for archiving the finished deliverable. While you're still working, keep your adjustment layers, masks and smart objects live, that's what lets you go back and change things without painting over them.

Are group folders counted as layers? They are, so every group eats into the 8000-layer limit. Even so, they're worth it. Groups keep a file organised and let you hide or show whole sections in one click.
