Estimating Fabric for a Pillowcase
Feed in the pillow’s length and width and the tool works out how much fabric a pillowcase will take. The math behind it is fabric (cm) = ceil((length + 5) × 2 + (width + 5) × 2). That +5 on each side covers your seam allowance and a bit of ease, so the case still slides on without a fight. Why double each measurement? Because the case has to cover the front face and the back, which means the number you get back is really the fabric perimeter the piece needs to wrap around.
What comes out is one linear figure in centimetres. Planning an envelope closure that overlaps at the back, or a flap to tuck the pillow behind? Tack on another 15–20 cm.
Applications
Home sewers reach for this when they’re making custom bedding or matching a pillowcase to a duvet set. It also helps craft sellers who need to cost out a batch of decorative cushion covers before they buy.
FAQ
Why add 5 cm to each side? That margin gives you seam allowance and a little ease, which keeps the finished case from gripping the pillow too tightly.
Does it include a zip or envelope flap? It doesn’t. For an envelope overlap or a closure flap, add roughly 15–20 cm.
What about fabric width? The result is a linear length, so check that it sits within your bolt width (usually 140–150 cm) and you can cut the piece in one go.
