T-Shirt Fabric Consumption Calculator

Lay the piece out as one rectangle and the fabric you use works out to area_m2 = (height_cm × width_cm) / 10000. An adult size M tee usually eats up somewhere around 0.8–1.2 m², and where it lands in that range depends on the cut, how long the sleeves are, and the seam allowance.

Cut by cut, the numbers shake out like this: a tank top runs about 0.7 m², a regular short-sleeve tee around 1.0 m², and plus-size or long-sleeve versions 1.5 m² or up. A 100% cotton jersey weighs roughly 140–180 g/m², which puts a regular tee at about 150–200 g of raw fabric before you add any trims.

Applications

Tailors, small confection shops and apparel buyers lean on this to price raw material, plan how many rolls to buy, and put together a production quote. Brazil's standardized sizing (P/M/G/GG) comes from ABNT NBR ISO 3759, which pins down the body measurements that each size's pattern is built around.

FAQ

Does this account for waste? It doesn't. Add 10–15% on top of the geometric area to cover what you lose in cutting, which gets worse with patterned or directional prints.

What about ribbing on collar and cuffs? That comes from a separate ribbed knit. Budget an extra 0.05–0.10 m² per piece for it.

Why does fabric width matter? Standard knit rolls come in 1.50 m or 1.80 m. The wider roll lets you nest more pattern pieces side by side, so you waste less on each shirt.
