Sizing Fabric for a Bed Sheet

Give it your mattress length, width and thickness (the depth), and it tells you how big a piece of fabric to cut for a flat sheet. Behind the scenes it runs length = ceil(comp + thickness × 2 + 30) and width = ceil(larg + thickness × 2 + 30), so you get something like L × W cm. Why is thickness counted twice? The sheet has to fall down both sides of the mattress. And the +30 cm that gets tacked on is the overhang you tuck underneath, one chunk per side.

The clothing estimators hand you one linear length. Here you get two numbers, an actual cut size. Hold both against the usable width of your fabric. For a big bed you might need wide bedding cloth, or you sew two widths together to reach across.

Applications

Handy when you're sewing flat sheets to order, working out the fabric for a chunky orthopaedic or pillow-top mattress, or running a hotel or hostel where the linen has to fit beds of different depths.

FAQ

Is this for a flat or fitted sheet? A flat sheet, with enough left over to tuck under. Fitted sheets are a different beast: elastic at the corners and a slightly different way of cutting.

Why does thickness matter? The deeper the mattress, the further the sheet has to drop on each side. That's why depth gets counted twice, once for each direction.

Will it fit standard fabric width? On a queen or king, probably not. You may have to join two widths of fabric to get across the bed.
