Brazilian Police Pay by Position
Each state sets its own police pay in Brazil, and the Civil Police (PC) and Military Police (PM) get their own separate tables. Gross pay usually works out as soldo + gratificacao_risco_vida + adicionais, with the life-risk bonus, special operations pay and length of service piling onto the base salary.
To put numbers on it, here are reference values for the Sao Paulo PM: PM Soldier from R$ 5,000+, Corporal R$ 5,800, Sergeant R$ 6,700, Lieutenant R$ 9,000, Captain R$ 11,000+, and Colonel above R$ 25,000. Rio de Janeiro tends to pay below Sao Paulo, and the Federal District sits at the top with the highest tables. Both officers and enlisted personnel get 30 days of annual leave plus the one-third bonus.
Applications
It comes in handy if you're studying for a police entrance exam, if you're already on the force and looking ahead to a promotion, or if you want to line up PC and PM careers across different states. It also gives you a read on net pay once pension and income tax come out.
FAQ
Do PC and PM earn the same? Not always. Tables are set state by state, so the Civil Police and Military Police can be paid differently in the same place, even though the federal government pushes for parity between equivalent positions.
What is the life-risk allowance? It's an extra on top of the soldo that accounts for how dangerous police work is. How much it adds depends on the state, and in some it can hit 30% of the base or more.
Is there a 13th salary and vacation bonus? Yes. Like other public servants, police officers get a 13th salary along with 30 days of annual leave and the constitutional one-third bonus on top.
