Brazilian Military Pay by Rank
In Brazil, a service member's base salary goes by the name soldo. It changes with rank in the Army, with corps in the Navy, and with the aeronautical hierarchy in the Air Force. To find total gross pay you take soldo + adicionais + gratificacoes. The allowances that get added on top cover things like length of service, military habilitation, a command function, and dependents.
Some ballpark 2026 figures to anchor the numbers: Soldier/Sailor R$ 1,300–1,500, Sergeant R$ 5,500–8,000, Lieutenant R$ 10,000–13,000, Captain R$ 14,000–15,000, Major R$ 17,000, Colonel R$ 20,000+, and a General of the Army somewhere around R$ 30,000. Law 13,954/2019 reworked the careers and pulled the pay table together, and over the past few years the annual bumps have landed in the 5–8% range.
Applications
People reach for this when they map out a career, weigh one branch against another (Army, Navy, Air Force), or want a sense of what stays in hand once INSS and IRRF come off the top. It also helps when you're working out a retirement transfer or a pension base, and more broadly when active and reserve personnel are making money decisions.
FAQ
Is soldo the same as net salary? No, the soldo is just the base. What actually lands is the soldo with allowances and bonuses added, then military social security and income tax taken back out.
Do all branches pay the same? Yes. Federal law puts the Army, Navy and Air Force on one shared pay table, matched by equivalent rank and set by the Ministry of Defense.
How often is soldo adjusted? There's no yearly index that forces a raise. Each adjustment rides on its own law instead. Lately the increases granted have run between 5% and 8%.
