Residential Pool Volume

Residential pool sizing

Most home pools land somewhere between 6×3 m (a small lap or recreational pool) and 8×4 m (a family pool with a diving area). For depth, figure 1.20–1.50 m if it is just for recreation, and 1.80–2.50 m once you add a diving section. To get the volume in liters, use V = L × W × H × 1000, so an 8×4×1.5 m pool comes out around 48,000 L. When the floor slopes (rampa), average the minimum and maximum depths.

When it comes to lining, you have a few choices: cerâmica/azulejo holds up well and is the traditional route, vinyl liner costs less but lasts 8–12 years, and fiberglass arrives pre-fab and goes in fast. NBR 10339 covers the recirculation and filtration side, calling for a full turnover every 6–8 h with the pump sized to the volume. And when you empty the pool, the CONAMA effluent rules kick in.

FAQ

How deep should a pool be for diving? Aim for at least 2.00 m at the deep end. FINA standards set the floor at 1.80 m, but for a home pool the safer target is 2.20–2.50 m, which keeps head injuries off the table.

What is the minimum lot for a backyard pool? Most municipal COE ask for a 1.50 m setback from the property lines. Once you count the deck, a 6×3 m pool usually wants a backyard of at least 8×6 m.

Do I need a building permit? Usually yes. Once a pool goes past about 5,000 L, you will generally need an alvará from the prefecture plus an ART/RRT from a CREA/CAU professional.

Theoretical Combustion Air Volume

Calculate the theoretical air volume needed for complete combustion of a hydrocarbon C_xH_y, V_air = (x + y/4) × 22.4 ÷ (0.21 × M), from the carbon x, hydrogen y atoms and the molar mass M. The result, in Nm³ of air per kg of fuel (at normal conditions), is the stoichiometric air — the basis for sizing fans, burners and combustion air systems. The factor 22.4 is the ideal gas molar volume (L/mol at STP) and 0.21 the volume fraction of O₂ in air. Methane needs ~13.3 Nm³/kg. Multiplied by the excess air, it gives the actual air supplied. Compressed Air Receiver Volume

Sizes a compressed air receiver from the maximum number of motor starts per hour the compressor allows: V = 15 × free air delivery in m³/min × atmospheric pressure in bar ÷ (starts per hour × load-unload pressure band in bar). The constant 15 comes from the worst case, in which demand is exactly half the compressor capacity: the receiver then fills and drains at half flow, each of the two legs lasts twice what it would at full flow, and the whole cycle is four times that unit time — the condition that maximizes the number of starts, and the 15 is the 60 minutes in an hour divided by that 4. The result, in cubic metres, is the minimum volume: a smaller receiver makes the motor start more often than the manufacturer allows and overheats the winding, while a larger one costs nothing but money and floor space. Because volume is inversely proportional to the pressure band, widening the unload differential from 1 to 2 bar halves the tank, which is usually cheaper than buying a bigger vessel. Enter the compressor free air delivery, the maximum number of starts per hour, the load-unload pressure band and the local atmospheric pressure.
