How Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) works
TCO sums every cost involved in owning an asset across its useful life, not just the sticker price. For a car: TCO = price + IPVA + insurance + maintenance + fuel + parking + depreciation − resale value. For an enterprise computer: hardware + software licenses + support contracts + electricity + training. The point of the metric is to make hidden recurring costs visible alongside the upfront one.
Concrete example: a R$ 80,000 popular car over 5 years. Depreciation around 40% (R$ 32,000), insurance and IPVA combined roughly R$ 30,000 over the period, fuel near R$ 25,000 (assuming average mileage), maintenance and tires near R$ 15,000. The TCO lands around R$ 150,000 — nearly double the purchase price, which is why per-kilometer cost is the honest unit when comparing transport options.
When TCO is the right question
Buy vs. subscription decisions (car subscriptions like Volvo on Demand, Movida Mensal Flex), CapEx vs. OpEx in IT, cloud vs. on-prem hosting, in-house vs. outsourced services, fleet management, and replacement-cycle planning. Whenever there is a recurring cost stream behind a one-time purchase decision, TCO is the metric that surfaces the truth.
FAQ
Should I discount future costs to present value? For rigorous decisions, yes — use NPV (net present value) with a discount rate matching your opportunity cost. For quick household comparisons, nominal TCO over the same horizon for both options is usually enough.
How do I estimate depreciation? For cars, FIPE tables track market value year by year; popular models typically lose 15-20% in year one and 8-12% per year thereafter. For tech equipment, straight-line over the warranty period (3-5 years) is a reasonable proxy.
Does TCO include the user's time? Strictly, no — but for enterprise comparisons it should. Training hours, downtime, and support tickets often dominate hardware cost in software TCO, which is why "free" tools frequently lose to paid alternatives once labor is priced in.
