Soybean yield with climate factor (t/ha)
To estimate a soybean crop's total output, the formula is production_t = area_ha × base_yield_t_ha × climate_factor. The climate factor (0.5–1.2) folds several things into one number: rainfall during pod-filling (the R3–R5 stages), heat stress, dry spells (veranicos) and frost. Across Brazil the national average runs near 3,500 kg/ha (CONAB 2023/24 harvest). In a good year, the best growers in MT, GO and the southern states push past 4,500 kg/ha.
Planting windows shift from one region to the next: September–March in São Paulo/Paraná/Mato Grosso do Sul, October–March in Mato Grosso/Goiás/MS, and January–April in Rio Grande do Sul. Most of the planted area is sown with Roundup Ready (RR) transgenic soybean, which tolerates glyphosate. For regional cultivar trials and recommendation lists, EMBRAPA Soja in Londrina, PR is the reference.
Applications
It helps with harvest planning at the farm level, hedging futures on B3 or CBOT, building cash-flow models around rural credit (Pronaf, Pronamp), crop insurance (PSR) and negotiating a CPR (Cédula de Produto Rural). Agronomists lean on it too, whether they're weighing RTRS or ProTerra sustainability programmes or sizing up silos and logistics.
FAQ
How much soybean does Brazil produce? It leads the world in both production and exports. The 2023/24 harvest came to around 150 Mt off roughly 45 million hectares.
What climate factor should I use? An average season sits at 1.0. Drop to 0.7–0.8 when a strong La Niña brings drought to the south or heat waves hit during pod-filling. Bump it up to 1.1–1.2 in El Niño years when the rain spreads out nicely.
How is yield measured? The traditional unit is sacks (60 kg) per hectare, so 60 sc/ha comes to 3,600 kg/ha, or 3.6 t/ha.
