Bedroom sizing for comfort

How much room a bedroom really needs comes down to the mattress plus the space you leave to walk around it. A single (solteiro, 88×188 cm) works in roughly 8 m². A double/casal (138×188 cm) wants about 9 m², a queen (158×198 cm) around 10 m², and a king (193×203 cm) at least 12 m². Run a 60 cm-deep wardrobe along a full wall and you can expect the minimums to go up by 1–2 m². A rough rule of thumb: A = (bed area) + (circulation 60–90 cm on three sides) + closet.

NBR 15575 puts the habitability minimum at 7 m² for a two-person bedroom and 9 m² for three. Keep in mind those are the legal floor, not a target; once you account for comfort and where furniture actually fits, the real figures tend to land higher. On the access side of the bed, leave at least 60 cm of clearance, and 90 cm where a wardrobe door has to swing open.

Applications

Reviewing a residential project, running an NBR 15575 performance check, planning MCMV units, putting together interior design briefs, deciding what furniture to buy, laying out a hotel suite, or sizing a condo flat.

FAQ

Can a king bed fit in 10 m²? It'll be tight. The bed by itself is already ≈ 3.9 m², so you give up the comfortable walking space. Plan on 12 m² as the practical floor, or 14 m² if you want a wardrobe and nightstands without things feeling cramped.

What if I have only 6 m²? You can still fit a single bed, a 60 cm aisle and a slim wardrobe in 6 m². Just note that anything below 7 m² is sub-standard for two people under NBR 15575.

Where should the bed go relative to the door? The old ergonomic habit is to point the feet toward the door. Whatever you choose, leave at least 70 cm between the side of the bed and the arc of the wardrobe door.
