Estimating Fabric for a Blouse
For cutting blouses there's a handy rule: fabric_m = (length_cm + sleeve_allowance_cm) × 2 / 100, and it assumes a standard 150 cm wide bolt of sergeite, jersey or poplin. That factor of 2 comes from laying the front and back panels side by side. When the bust circumference runs wider than the bolt, you'll need a third panel. A short‑sleeve camisole tends to land around 0.8 m, a long social blouse closer to 1.2 m, and a structured inner blazer can climb to 1.5 m.
If the design carries long sleeves, cuffs or a separate yoke, throw in about 0.5 m more, and budget another 5–10% for shrinkage in viscose, cotton or denim. Lightweight polyester and viscose leave little room for error on the cut, so round up to the next 10 cm. Jeans (denim) shrinks the most of all and really should get a pre‑wash before you measure anything.
Applications
Home seamstresses planning a capsule wardrobe lean on this estimate, and so do fashion students sourcing rolls for a collection or small confection shops pricing the cost of each piece. There's a practical bonus online too: a buyer can check whether the 1 m cut a store is offering will actually cover the pattern they just downloaded.
FAQ
Does the bolt width really matter? It does. The Brazilian standard sits at 1.40–1.50 m, while imported knits sometimes reach 1.60 m. With a wider bolt you can often tuck the sleeves in alongside the body and save 0.3 m.
Which fabrics need extra allowance? Viscose, rayon and 100% cotton lose 3–7% on the first wash. Polyester blends hold much closer to their nominal length.
How much for a blazer used as an inner layer? Count on roughly 1.5 m of mid‑weight gabardine and another 1 m of lining, because the facings and pocket bags eat into the total too.
