Estimating Fabric for a Pair of Bermuda Shorts

Give it two numbers, the outseam length and the waist circumference, and it works out how much fabric a pair of knee-length Bermuda shorts will need. The heuristic behind it is fabric (cm) = ceil(length × 2.2 + waist × 0.2). Why 2.2 on the length? Each leg gets cut as a front and a back panel, and every one of those panels runs the full length of the shorts. The waist term is smaller because it only has to cover the waistband, the pockets and a bit of seam width.

What comes out is one linear figure in centimetres, and it assumes apparel fabric somewhere around 140–150 cm wide. Round it up, then leave a margin for the hems, the fly, the belt loops and a little shrinkage. That way you won't run short halfway through the cut.

Applications

Home sewers, small ateliers and uniform suppliers use it to pin down fabric and the cost of each garment. It also helps when you're buying in bulk to sew several pairs out of the same cloth.

FAQ

Why is the length factor lower than for trousers? A Bermuda stops at the knee, so every panel is shorter. Full-length trousers would push the multiplier higher.

Does it cover pockets and waistband? More or less. The waist term plus the round-up margin soak up the small extras, though elaborate cargo pockets will want some extra cloth.

What about fabric width? The assumption is 140–150 cm. If you're working with narrow 90 cm fabric, tack on roughly 30–50% more length.
