How early should you arrive at the airport?
The rough rule most travelers go by is 1 to 2 hours for a domestic flight and 2 to 3 hours for an international one. If you have a bag to check, you need to be at the counter in person, and most airlines close baggage drop 45-60 min before a domestic departure and 60-90 min before an international one. Online check-in usually opens somewhere between 24 and 48 hours out, which lets you bypass the counter entirely if you're traveling carry-on only. Passengers on premium tiers (Gold, Platinum, Diamond) and members of frequent-flyer programs (LATAM Pass, Smiles, TudoAzul) get their own lines, and that shaves a lot off the wait.
Example: say you have a 14:00 international flight out of GRU and a bag to check. Get there by 11:00 (T-3h) and you've left yourself roughly 30-60 min for check-in and another 30-45 min for immigration and security at peak hours, with a bit of slack on top for the walk to the gate and boarding 30-40 min before departure.
Variables that change the rule
Big hubs (GRU, GIG, CGH, MIA, JFK, CDG) call for extra padding, since the immigration line on its own can run 30-60 min. Holiday peaks like Christmas, Carnival and the July school break will often double those queues. Brazil's ANAC sets out what you're owed when the airline causes the delay, but showing up on time is still on you. If you're taking an Uber or 99 during rush hour, tack on another 20-30 min for traffic. Missing the flight costs you a lot more than killing time in the lounge.
FAQ
Can I skip check-in if I have no luggage? Yes. Check in online or at a self-service kiosk, carry on only, and you head straight to security. Even so, plan on 1 hour before domestic and 2 hours before international to leave room for security and boarding.
When does the boarding gate close? Usually 15-20 min before departure. Show up after that and the airline can hand your seat to someone on standby.
Does Brazilian law require a minimum advance arrival? No. The airline is the one that sets the cutoff, and it's usually printed right on the ticket. Miss it and you're a no-show, which generally means no refund.
