Annual Savings: Electric Vehicle vs. Combustion (ICE)
To estimate how much an EV saves you in fuel and energy over a year, the calculator uses savings = km/year × (cost_ICE_per_km − cost_EV_per_km). The two per-km costs come from cost_EV_per_km = (kWh/100km × price_kWh) ÷ 100 and cost_ICE_per_km = price_per_litre ÷ km_per_litre.
In Brazil an EV runs about R$ 0,10–0,15 per km on energy against R$ 0,40–0,60 per km on gasoline, so you're looking at a 3–5x advantage on the running cost. Maintenance tells a similar story, with ICE upkeep (oil, filters, spark plugs, exhaust, clutch) coming in 2–3x what an EV needs. Stretch that across a 12-year service life and the accumulated savings can pass R$ 60.000. The catch is the sticker price, which is still higher for the EV, so the initial payback lands somewhere around 5–7 years. FAQ
Does this account for the higher purchase price of the EV? It doesn't. The tool only measures the annual energy savings. To get the simple payback period, divide the price difference by that yearly figure.
What if I charge mostly at public fast chargers? Swap the residential R$ 0,85 for R$ 1,50–2,50 per kWh, and expect the savings to drop by 30–50%.
Is battery replacement included? No. Modern lithium packs carry an 8-year / 160.000 km warranty and are usually still at 70% capacity by 200.000 km, which is why most owners never end up replacing them.
