A hybrid’s yearly fuel savings follow savings = km/year × price_per_litre × (1/km_per_L_ICE − 1/km_per_L_hybrid). Widen the gap between the hybrid’s km/L and the ICE benchmark and your yearly return grows with it.

A full hybrid (HEV) such as the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid trims fuel use by 20–30% against an equivalent ICE, because the electric motor takes over the urban accelerations and recovers energy under braking. A PHEV like the BYD Song DM-i can reach 60% savings when the owner plugs in at home every night, since most short trips never touch the engine. Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro give hybrids and PHEVs an IPVA discount, and in Sao Paulo they skip the “rodizio” license-plate restriction entirely.

FAQ

Is a PHEV always better than an HEV? Only when you can charge it every day. If you never plug in, the PHEV just acts like a heavier HEV and burns more fuel than the lighter HEV version would.

Do hybrids really need premium gasoline? No. Toyota and Honda hybrids sold in Brazil run on regular gasoline or ethanol (flex). Check the owner’s manual to be sure.

How long does the hybrid battery last? Usually 8–10 years, or past 200.000 km. In some markets Toyota warranties stretch to 10 years / 1.000.000 km.

Adiabatic Flame Temperature

Estimate the adiabatic flame temperature, T_ad = T_initial + LHV ÷ (m × cp), from the lower heating value LHV (kJ/kg fuel), the mass of combustion products per kg fuel m, the average specific heat of the gases cp (kJ/kg·K) and the initial temperature. The result, in °C, is the maximum theoretical temperature the gases would reach if all the combustion energy heated the products, with no heat loss. It is an upper bound: real flames are cooler (radiation losses, dissociation, excess air). It sets the thermal severity on materials and NOx formation. Enter the LHV, the gas mass, the cp and the initial temperature.

Theoretical Maximum CO₂

Calculate the theoretical maximum CO₂ percentage in dry flue gas from complete combustion of a hydrocarbon C_xH_y, CO₂max = x ÷ (x + (x + y/4) × 3.762) × 100%, from the carbon x and hydrogen y atoms. The result, in %, is the CO₂ obtained with perfect stoichiometric combustion (no excess air) — the reference value of gas analyzers. Methane has CO₂max ≈ 11.7%; coal, ~18-20%. Comparing the measured CO₂ with the theoretical maximum indicates the excess air: the lower the measured CO₂ relative to the maximum, the more excess air diluting the gases. Enter x and y.
