Accessible bathroom dimensions (NBR 9050)
Under NBR 9050, a full accessible (PCD) bathroom has to leave a clear 1.50 m circle for a wheelchair to turn in. The door is 0.80 m wide and either swings outward or slides. Both sides of the toilet get grab bars: one fixed at 0.78 m off the floor, one folding at 0.80 m. The toilet itself sits 0.46 m from the finished floor, which is 5 cm taller than a normal one, and 0.50 m from the side wall. When space is tight on a retrofit, there's a reduced "meia-pia" layout instead.
The shower stall clears 0.90 ร 0.95 m and carries a fold-down seat at 0.46 m. Under the lavatory you want 0.73-0.80 m of open knee space. For someone seated to actually use the mirror, it either tilts 10ยฐ or starts no higher than 0.90 m from the floor.
Applications
Lei 13.146/2015 LBI, public restrooms, school SUS, INSS service units, PCD areas in condos and hotels (Decreto 9.296/2018 puts 5% of rooms as accessible).
FAQ
What if I only have 1.20 m? The "meia-pia" variant fits in 1.50 ร 1.70 m, though you lose some services along the way. Run it past your local CREA for accessibility sign-off.
Is the bidet mandatory? No. If you do install one, it follows the same accessibility rules the toilet does.
Door must open outward? Yes. It either swings out or slides, never inward, so that someone who has fallen inside won't end up blocking the door for rescuers.
