Pet Age Calculator

Convert your dog or cat age into human years using the modern AVMA formula. Large and giant dogs age faster. Shows the pet life stage. Everything in your browser.

Pet age in human years: beyond the "×7" rule

The old "1 dog year = 7 human years" rule is too simplistic — puppies and kittens mature fast and then aging slows. The epigenetic formula by Wang et al. (UC San Diego, 2020), derived from DNA methylation patterns, gives human_age = 16 · ln(dog_age) + 31. So a 1-year-old dog ≈ 31 human years, and a 4-year-old dog ≈ 53. For cats, feline associations use a stepwise model: the 1st year ≈ 15, the 2nd adds 9 (total 24), and each year after adds 4. Breed size matters for dogs: small breeds like Chihuahuas live 14–17 years, while giants like Great Danes only 7–10. Example: a 5-year-old Labrador (large breed) is roughly equivalent to a 47-year-old human.

Practical applications

Knowing your pet's equivalent age helps adjust diet (puppy/kitten, adult, senior formulas), schedule preventive vet visits (yearly for adults, biannually for seniors aged 7+ in dogs, 10+ in cats), and time vaccinations — the V8/V10 multivalent for dogs and V3/V4/V5 for cats are typically annual, while rabies is yearly and legally mandatory in most Brazilian municipalities. Senior pets benefit from joint supplements, dental cleaning, and bloodwork.

FAQ

Why isn't "×7" accurate? Dogs reach sexual maturity around 1 year (≈ 15 human years) and aging slows after. A linear factor can't capture that curve.

Do small dogs really live longer? Yes — small breeds often reach 15+ years while giant breeds rarely pass 10. The reason is partly genetic (growth hormone signaling) and partly cardiovascular load.

How are cats different? Cats age more uniformly than dogs and rarely vary by "breed size". A 15-year-old cat ≈ 76 human years.

When is my pet a "senior"? Small dogs and cats around 10–11 years; large dogs around 7–8. Time to start senior bloodwork.
