What drives skirt yardage is mostly the silhouette and how far the hem sits below the hip. For a quick number, the rule fabric_m = skirt_length_cm / 100 + 0.3 works for an A-line cut on 1.5 m wide fabric, and usually lands somewhere between 1.0 m and 1.5 m. What about the waistband? Set aside about 0.15 m for a straight contour waistband. Bump that to 0.25 m if you're interfacing both sides for a stiffer finish.

Should I cut on the bias? A bias cut gives a gorgeous drape, but expect to buy 30–50% more fabric than a straight-grain version, because you can't nest the pieces as tightly on the layout.
