Calculating Fabric for Skirts
What drives skirt yardage is mostly the silhouette and how far the hem sits below the hip. For a quick number, the rule fabric_m = skirt_length_cm / 100 + 0.3 works for an A-line cut on 1.5 m wide fabric, and usually lands somewhere between 1.0 m and 1.5 m. Go for a pencil skirt and that slim taper at the hem brings it down to about 0.8 m. A pleated skirt is the opposite story. Knife, box or sunray pleats all eat 2 m to 3 m, since every pleat triples the width you actually see.
Planning to line the skirt? Lining pays off with sheer fabrics or scratchy ones like wool gabardine, so tack on about 0.5 m of bemberg, acetate or polyester. For a softer drape, sewers reach for viscose and microfiber, both still everywhere in contemporary fashion. When it comes to drafting technique, the Singer Sewing Book and its long-running schoolbook editions are still the go-to reference for skirts across Brazil and Latin America.
Applications
Home sewers, school uniform makers and bridal ateliers all use a number like this to budget fabric before they ever pick up the scissors. It comes in handy too with indie patterns from Burda, Vogue or McCall’s, which now and then quote yardage only in yards (1 yd = 0.914 m). In a boutique setting you'll see the figure rounded up to the next 0.1 m, with an extra 5% on the order to cover cutting waste and lining up the print across panels.
FAQ
How much extra do I need for a circle skirt? Figure on roughly 2.5 to 3 times the radius of the finished length for a full circle. On 1.5 m fabric, that means 2.5 m to 3.5 m total.
What about the waistband? Set aside about 0.15 m for a straight contour waistband. Bump that to 0.25 m if you're interfacing both sides for a stiffer finish.
Should I cut on the bias? A bias cut gives a gorgeous drape, but expect to buy 30–50% more fabric than a straight-grain version, because you can't nest the pieces as tightly on the layout.
