Endless runner game

You know that Chrome dinosaur that shows up when the internet drops? This endless runner was born from it. The rule is simple and addictive: run as far as you can, dodging the obstacles. And the further you get, the faster everything becomes.

The controls hold no mystery. Space or the up arrow jumps over the cacti; the down arrow crouches under the birds. Speed grows along with distance, so your reflexes have to get sharper and sharper. Your high score is saved, waiting to be beaten next time.

Running entirely in the browser, with no install, the game fits nicely into those break-time minutes when you just want to beat your own record.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to duck to dodge the birds?
In practice, no. The bird flies in a band that ends exactly at the head height of the standing character, and the collision test only fires on a real overlap, so a runner on the ground clears it without touching. The down arrow does shrink the character from 40 to 20 pixels tall, but its real use is as a fast drop: press it mid-jump and the character snaps straight back to the ground. Jumping blindly is what gets you hit. Cacti are another story: those need a jump.
How often does the game speed up?
Speed climbs by half a pixel per frame every 200 points of distance: it starts at 5 and steps to 5.5, then 6, then 6.5, with no cap. Meanwhile the gap between one obstacle and the next shrinks from 90 frames down to a floor of 40, so past roughly 1,500 metres the difficulty comes more from spacing than from raw speed. One catch: the counter adds 1 per drawn frame rather than per second, so on a 120 Hz monitor the whole game runs at double pace.
Is my high score kept after I close the tab?
Yes, in the browser's own local storage under the key cri_best, and nothing beyond that. There is no account and no sync: a different browser, a private window or clearing site data all reset the number to zero, and the record on a phone never reaches the desktop. One more point: the write happens at the moment of the crash, when the run ends. Close the tab mid-run and the best run of your life leaves no trace.
