Zipper Size for Opening cm

Suggests commercial zipper size based on required opening length in centimeters.

โ€”

Zipper length by garment opening

Take the opening_cm + 2 cm as your zipper length, leaving tolerance for the top stop and the bottom box. A few openings to keep in mind: side-zip dress 20โ€“30 cm, full-zip jacket 50โ€“80 cm, trouser fly 12โ€“18 cm, skirt back 15โ€“22 cm, cushion cover 30โ€“40 cm. What you reach for depends on tooth size and material. Nylon coil #3โ€“#5 suits light dresses and skirts, molded plastic #5 goes on jackets and bags, and metal #5โ€“#10 belongs on jeans and heavy outerwear. The Japanese brand YKK is the industrial benchmark worldwide; with cheaper brands, the slider usually gives out first. Stick with closed-end zippers for dresses and pants, and separating (open-end) ones for jackets and cardigans. Say you have a side-zip dress with a 22 cm opening: that calls for a 22 cm closed-end nylon #3 zipper.

Applications: atelier, repair and customization

Ateliers lean on it to keep standard lengths in stock (15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60 cm). Repair shops use it when swapping out broken zippers on jeans, jackets and bags. And hobby sewists reach for it while customizing thrifted clothes or upcycling fabric scraps.

FAQ

Can I shorten a zipper? With closed-end zippers, yes: sew a new bottom stop above where you want to cut. Separating zippers are different, since you can only shorten them from the top.

Nylon coil or metal? Nylon coil flexes and hides well behind fabric, which makes it a natural fit for dresses. Metal copes with abrasion and load, so save it for jeans and jackets.

Why is YKK more expensive? Its sliders and teeth are made to tighter tolerances, so failures stay rare even after thousands of cycles.
